Agriculture

The agriculture sector in Aotearoa New Zealand is a significant contributor to the country's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, accounting for nearly half of the nation's total emissions, primarily due to methane emissions from livestock such as sheep and cattle. Despite its economic importance, the sector faces increasing pressure to adopt more sustainable practices to reduce its carbon footprint and explore innovative solutions. Addressing agricultural emissions is critical for New Zealand to meet its climate targets and transition towards a low-carbon economy. In this evaluation we see some of the key players in the industry with differing results.

Things worth noting:

- Fonterra has set SBTi targets and is working on scope 3.

- Silver Fern Farms has a net zero product line (with little details at this stage but hoping to see more details on this soon).

- Alliance has produced their first report. We will expect to see more transparency as they report more.

- It’s good to see the tangata whenua engagement from Ravensdown and hope to see a development of absolute targets for 2030 in the near future.
