Glossary of terms

We have compiled three different types of terms and abbreviations we have used throughout the website to help make sense of the various aspects involved with climate action.

Carbon management terms

Term

Definition

GHG or greenhouse gases

Greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and fluorinated gases

Carbon footprint or carbon inventory

A report, following voluntary GHG protocol and/or ISO 14067 that outlines the emissions of an organisation for a given year.

Scope 1

Refers to direct emissions from sources that are owned or controlled by the company, such as emissions from company vehicles or on-site fuel combustion.

Scope 2

Covers indirect emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating, and cooling consumed by the company.

Scope 3

Encompasses all other indirect emissions that occur in a company’s value chain (upstream and downstream), including those from purchased goods and services, business travel, waste disposal, and employee commuting.

Absolute targets

GHG emission targets that have an absolute reduction amount.

Intensity targets

GHG emission targets that have a target based on the key output of the organisation.

Carbon offsets

Offset credits are a reduction or avoidance of emissions that can be used to compensate for emissions elsewhere. They allow an organisation to claim credit for reducing emissions, even if those reductions occur outside their immediate operations. Common types of offset projects include renewable energy projects (like wind or solar), methane capture from landfills, or energy efficiency improvements.

Carbon removals

Offset credits are a reduction or avoidance of emissions that can be used to compensate for emissions elsewhere. They allow an organisation to claim credit for reducing emissions, even if those reductions occur outside their immediate operations. Common types of offset projects include renewable energy projects (like wind or solar), methane capture from landfills, or energy efficiency improvements.

Net Zero

Net zero emissions means that a company’s operations will either emit no GHG or will offset any emissions they produce through activities like carbon capture, reforestation, or purchasing carbon credits.
